Westboro EcoHaus - Home tour

Westboro EcoHaus was conceived to tread lightly on the environment and to blend into an existing city neighbourhood. Built using German passive house principles, its modest size permits the home to be net zero energy ready. It demonstrates that passive house principles can be used with any architectural style, in this case an updated craftsman. The design also integrates FlexHome concepts to accommodate various future needs of occupants.

A series of environmental principles were applied in the design and construction of the home.  For example, onsite trees were preserved to maintain the character of the neighbourhood and to provide summer shading. Construction waste was minimized by using wall panels built offsite.  Water use is minimized by stacking the utility room, kitchen and bathrooms. A grid tied solar array combined with super-insulation and passive solar heating means the house already operates on near zero energy.
