Riverstone: Clay Straw EcoNest brought to you by Ontario Natural Building Coalition

The EcoNest Guest House has walls of cob (straw, clay, water) construction surrounding a beautiful timber frame structure. The walls are finished with an earthen plaster. This is the first house of its kind built in Canada. It has been constructed from natural, non-toxic local materials mostly from the farm. This home is based on construction techniques which date back 1000 years in Europe. At the center of the home is a masonry heater. The heat from a wood fire is stored in the thermal mass and radiates slowly into the home. In the summertime, the clay walls keep the home cool and comfortable. People with respiratory challenges breathe easily in this house.

Other “green-building” features include a wetland water treatment system, and a straw bale wood gasification boiler room

Learn more about this building at this year’s Green Energy Doors Open event happening all across Ontario along with Alberta and B.C. This educational tour is in collaboration with the Ontario Natural Buildings Coalition and their annual Ontario Natural Buildings Tour.
